Data Types



HSCIC (now known as NHS DIGITAL) can provide access to several different types of information:
  1.  identifiable - containing details that identify individuals e.g.
  • Name address, DOB etc, medical history, illnesses, GP/ Healthcare provider details).    
  1.  pseudonymised - about individuals but with identifying details (such as name or NHS number) replaced with a unique code  e.g.
  • Community Health Index (CHI) number, patient identity number/reference.
  1. anonymised - about individuals but with identifying details removed e.g.
  • Statistics about patient outcomes.
  • Research purposes.
  1. aggregated - anonymised information grouped together so that it doesn't identify individuals e.g.
  • Statistics about patient outcomes.
  • Research purposes.

Sources of information:

We collect information from various sources:

  • Students,
  • Practice owners,
  • Dental professionals,
  • Course providers,
  • Course presenters,
  • Dental companies/company representatives,
  • Venues,
  • Caterers,
  • General Dental Council,
  • Scottish Qualification Authority,
  • Health Boards.

The care information we collect is used for purposes such as:


  • Statistical analysis,  
  • Development of courses, educational programmes,
  • Management of students/ course participants/ staff,
  • Health promotion /improvement,
  • Support improvement in the delivery of patient care,
  • Quality improvement/ audits.
